Johan grew up on the southwest coast of South Africa in a family passionate about competitive sailing. His love for the ocean and the sport eventually led him to become Commodore of the Mossel Bay Yacht Club.
Before entering the yachting industry, Johan spent 16 years in Correctional Services as a Warrant Officer, specializing in the rehabilitation of young offenders. He later became Head of the Mess at Mossel Bay Prison before establishing his own security company, specializing in the installation of a variety of security systems.
In 2015 he got the opportunity to work on a yacht, starting as a Deckhand and working his way up to Captain. Throughout his career, he has served aboard private vessels and charter vessels such as M/Y MARABELLA II, M/Y MYMYMY, and is currently a Captain on board M/Y NO SHORTCUTS.
As a Captain, Johan believes in helping out in all departments and that no task is beneath him. He wants to create a successful and happy crew with a strong bond between everyone. He also believes in helping junior crew members fulfil their potential. He often says that they are lucky to work in such beautiful surroundings and should take a step back each day to appreciate how blessed they are.
His goal is to meet every guest's needs in a highly professional manner. He wants them to leave the yacht with beautiful, happy memories that they can keep forever. He believes this can only be achieved through hard work, honesty and commitment to the yacht and its programme.
Outside of yachting, Johan enjoys spending as much time as possible with his two daughters and supporting them in achieving success in their own careers. His hobbies include scuba diving, golf and fishing. He also enjoys hiking and has a great love for nature and the outdoors.
His life motto is: “Change the things you can and accept those you cannot change. Live every day to the fullest and be thankful for all life’s blessings.”
