This is one of the most strikingly beautiful coves in the Balearic Islands. The cliffs plunge into crystal-clear waters strewn with rocks. The stonework resembles a staircase in places. Long, flat stelae seem to enjoy the soothing rays of the sun. These intertwined rocks have allowed cavities to appear below sea level, creating divine natural pools. Men have carved an altar in the stone, where visitors sometimes leave offerings. This splendid site deserves to be listed as a protected site. It is part of the Cala d’Hort nature reserve. Not far away is the beautiful islet of Es Vedrá, a sight to behold. The translucent waters are a magnificent deep blue for admiring the many fish and enjoying a swim. For history and legend

This place is steeped in history. Legends have also been forged over the years. The Sa Pedrera cove in Cala d’Hort is an old quarry. Men quarried the stone and serviced it by boat to Eivissa, the capital of Ibiza, and Sant Antoni de Portmany, a lively town on the island’s west coast. The stone was also used to build part of Ibiza’s city walls. The story goes that the stone-cutters used to take refuge in a small cave that was still there when it rained.

More recently, a group of hippies used the area as a hideout in the 1960s. They moved into the cove to make it their home. It was they who first named it Atlantis. This nickname refers to the myth of Atlantis, an island sunk by the sea, brimming with natural riches and a symbol of “paradise lost”. The name is linked to the almost supernatural landscape, the strange shapes sculpted by man over the years and the emergence of rocks from the water. It was during this period that animals, human heads and Buddhas were beautifully carved into the rock.

To recharge your batteries

Like the hippies, Atlantis cove is an ideal place to recharge your batteries. Luxury, calm and pleasure – these famous lines from Baudelaire’s L’invitation au voyage could be the caption on a photo of Atlantis! The absence of any human presence – apart from the men’s heads sculpted into the rock – the Grande Bleue as far as the eye can see, and the soothing ochre tone of the rock, are all conducive to serenity. With majestic nature as your only companion, it doesn’t take much to take a step back from your everyday worries and put the beauty of the world back at the centre of your life.

How do I get to the Atlantis creek?

By land

Discover the mysterious Atlantis cove in Ibiza | Arthaud YachtingBeauty has to be earned! To reach the Sa Pedrera cove in Cala d’Hort by land, you need to go to the village of Sant Josep de sa Talaia, located in the south-west of the island. From Sant Josep, the Es Cubells road takes you to the road leading to Cala d’Hort beach. After a bend and a long straight stretch of coastline, park your car in the car park and continue on foot along a dirt track. This path takes you up to the cliff, across a kind of sand dune and then down a track to the cove. This is no easy walk, as the last few metres are very steep. It takes around forty minutes of steep descent, not to mention the heat. Reviews for the bravest and most determined!
